Susette's — Acrylic and Oil Workshops
Recommend Supplies and Equipment
This is only a recommended list. Bring what you have. This list may be especially helpful to those starting out.
- I like a cushion on my chair for sitting very long!
- Bring your standing or table easel and palette
- Oils - I prefer a tempered glass palette with gray back under it (those tempered glass cutting boards are great)
- A Seal-a-Palette box with custom tempered glass cut for it is nice too
- Acrylics - Seal-a-Palette box plus its paper palette inside
- You can use the Seal-a-Palette for both mediums with the right palettes inside
- Optional for Acrylics - a small clear plastic box with 6 or more solid compartments for the paint (crafts section has them)
- 3-4 white grocery type bags for trash
- Big black clip to hook the trash bag to your easel
- Plan on bringing a LIMITED PALETTE of colors in each medium.
- The primary colors plus black and white are plenty for those starting out. (Ok... if you already have a lot of colors bring them, but you may not need them! :^ )
- Acrylic - White, Cad Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Ultra Blue, Black
- 2 water containers (I like a small child's water pail with handle plus the plastic salsa containers)
- Small spray bottle (must have!)
- Oil - White, Cad Yellow Lemon, Alizarin Crimson, Ultra Blue, Black
- 3-4 brushes are all that is necessary, but Susette recommends good ones. 1 small (size 2), 2 medium (size 6), 1 large (size 10-12)
- 4 oz. bottle of M. Graham walnut oil medium
- Brushes - Bring what you have... Utrecht in Sugar House is a good source & online many sources
- Acrylic - (brights & filberts) Utrecht Series 232 are fine but you can also use the oil bristle brushes
- Oil (brights & filberts) - Utrecht 219 Series Chunking
- A roll of paper towels and a box of Kleenex
- Pencil, small sketchbook with your photo in the front please . . .
- Note book if you like to record notes and thoughts
- Ruler/blue tape/drop cloth (flannel back tablecloths from the dollar store are good)
- Turps (for oils) are for outside cleaning only. ALL solvents are hazardous if you read the warning labels.
- Solvents are bad by themselves, but they also infuse the air with paint toxins like cadmium, so we keep them outside.
- And . . . we will go outside to tone the canvases before we start the oil class.
- Substrates for each class: (2) 9"x12" and (1) 11x14" - gessoed canvas panels or stretched canvases would be lovely. We will put a fresh coat of gesso on these.
- Paint clothes plus apron, smock or old shirt of course
- I recommend a hat with a brim to shade eyes, even indoors... some may like visors
- I wear gloves - the kind with synthetic material on palms and fingers but a cloth back for air
