Susette's — Acrylic and Oil Workshops
Recommend Supplies and Equipment

This is only a recommended list. Bring what you have. This list may be especially helpful to those starting out.
  1. I like a cushion on my chair for sitting very long!
  2. Bring your standing or table easel and palette
  3. Oils - I prefer a tempered glass palette with gray back under it (those tempered glass cutting boards are great)
  4. A Seal-a-Palette box with custom tempered glass cut for it is nice too
  5. Acrylics - Seal-a-Palette box plus its paper palette inside
  6. You can use the Seal-a-Palette for both mediums with the right palettes inside
  7. Optional for Acrylics - a small clear plastic box with 6 or more solid compartments for the paint (crafts section has them)
  8. 3-4 white grocery type bags for trash
  9. Big black clip to hook the trash bag to your easel
  10. Plan on bringing a LIMITED PALETTE of colors in each medium.
  11. The primary colors plus black and white are plenty for those starting out. (Ok... if you already have a lot of colors bring them, but you may not need them! :^ )
  12. Acrylic - White, Cad Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Ultra Blue, Black
  13. 2 water containers (I like a small child's water pail with handle plus the plastic salsa containers)
  14. Small spray bottle (must have!)
  15. Oil - White, Cad Yellow Lemon, Alizarin Crimson, Ultra Blue, Black
  16. 3-4 brushes are all that is necessary, but Susette recommends good ones. 1 small (size 2), 2 medium (size 6), 1 large (size 10-12)
  17. 4 oz. bottle of M. Graham walnut oil medium
  18. Brushes - Bring what you have... Utrecht in Sugar House is a good source & online many sources
  19. Acrylic - (brights & filberts) Utrecht Series 232 are fine but you can also use the oil bristle brushes
  20. Oil (brights & filberts) - Utrecht 219 Series Chunking
  21. A roll of paper towels and a box of Kleenex
  22. Pencil, small sketchbook with your photo in the front please . . .
  23. Note book if you like to record notes and thoughts
  24. Ruler/blue tape/drop cloth (flannel back tablecloths from the dollar store are good)
  25. Turps (for oils) are for outside cleaning only.  ALL solvents are hazardous if you read the warning labels.
  26. Solvents are bad by themselves, but they also infuse the air with paint toxins like cadmium, so we keep them outside.
  27. And . . . we will go outside to tone the canvases before we start the oil class.
  28. Substrates for each class: (2) 9"x12" and (1) 11x14" - gessoed canvas panels or stretched canvases would be lovely. We will put a fresh coat of gesso on these.
  29. Paint clothes plus apron, smock or old shirt of course
  30. I recommend a hat with a brim to shade eyes, even indoors... some may like visors
  31. I wear gloves - the kind with synthetic material on palms and fingers but a cloth back for air
We won't be outside long otherwise I'd have you include your painting umbrellas
